MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SOLAR PANEL INSTALL
Here at The Renewable Republic we specialize in residential and commercial solar panel installations in the San Antonio and Austin area. Our goal is install the most efficient solar PV system for you, to allow you to get the most solar savings for your money.
When considering a solar panel installation you should first consider the amount of energy you consume each month. This number is easily found on your monthly energy company bill. Once you know how much energy you use, it is always a great idea to look at ways that you can reduce your energy consumption with simple fixes.
The more you can reduce your energy needs by fixing unused escaping energy and phantom loads, the cheaper your solar panel install will be; because you won’t need as much energy production to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. We describe some tips on home weatherization below so that you can maximize the power of your installed solar pv system.
WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT HOME WEATHERIZATION
Weatherization is the practice of optimizing a building’s performance for maximum energy efficiency, increased structural and appliance longevity, and overall comfort. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), through their Energy Star program, estimates that half of the energy used in the home is from heating and cooling. This is in large part due to the fact that most homes are not properly equipped to prevent conditioned air from escaping to the outside.
When conditioned air is allowed to escape a home, the a/c or heater must continue to operate in order to maintain comfortable temperatures. This results in unnecessarily high utility bills. The worst of these bypasses, or openings that allow air to infiltrate, are located between a home’s conditioned living-space and its unconditioned attic. Insulation will not suffice in preventing conditioned air from escaping through bypasses.
The solution lies in stopping infiltration from the largest bypasses with infiltration- preventing paper and spray-foam. Although tedious and physically demanding, weatherizing your home is still the most cost effective measure you can take to lower your utility bills, save-the-environment, and make your home a more comfortable space to live in.
WEATHERIZATION SERVICE DESCRIPTION
Any weatherization service should begin with an energy audit, in order to precisely determine the location of your
home’s largest bypasses. Using sophisticated building performance analysis tools and infrared cameras, the building performance specialists will map where your home’s most problematic bypasses are found.
They should provide a follow up the assessment by systematically going through your home and eliminating the bypasses in and around crawl spaces, doors, windows, and electrical outlets. Then they should climb and crawl their way through your attic, sealing bypasses around knee walls, top plates, duct and chimney chases, wiring holes, soffit vents, and recessed lighting housings.
Following the weatherization service, the building performance specialists will re-test the house, in order to ensure that all major issues in the building shell have been addressed. The weatherization service varies between 4-6 hrs, depending on the size and ease of maneuverability within the attic. Additional services, such as radiant barrier foil, may push a Weatherize Service to a full day.
HOME WEATHERIZATION RESULTS
Weatherizing your home will reduce the amount of energy expended on maintaining your home at a comfortable temperature.
The less energy you spend keeping your house comfortable, the less energy you have to use from your solar panels or purchase from your utility. These savings are as good as tax-free income.
Your home will become a more comfortable environment for living in, the result of less air infiltration in and out of the home
If solar is where your headed, weatherization drastically reduces the size of the system needed to “Kill-Your-Bill”.
GIVE YOUR HOUSE A COZY BLANKET
Insulation is like a down comforter for your home, keeping it warm in the winter and cool in the summer. By insulating your home’s walls, attic, and crawl spaces, you are ensuring that none of the energy expended in air conditioning and/or heating is wasted.
Insulation is measured in R-value, and the higher the R-value, the less heat is lost. The minimum recommended R-value for an attic is R-38. Loose-fill, cellulose insulation is usually ideal for retrofit situations, and has the added benefit that it is made from recycled news print.
